3D printing in the automotive industry: a crucial competitive advantage

The automotive industry was an early adopter of additive manufacturing technologies like 3D printing, exploiting its capability for rapid iteration to accelerate prototyping and product validation.

But as the technology has matured, so has its scope. Today, automotive 3D printing is widely used for bridge manufacturing, customised components and low-volume end-use parts, as well as tooling, jigs and fixtures. It can even be integrated into mass production, as demonstrated by Toyota with its MJF-printed transmission oil cooler ducts – the first mass-produced, certified, 3D-printed automotive part.

AMufacture has experience collaborating with major automotive OEMs to optimise pre-production, as well as bridge and ramp-up production. Our digital manufacturing ecosystem unlocks additive manufacturing’s competitive advantage, accelerating innovation and shrinking lead times while delivering the production consistency, traceability and quality assurance demanded by modern automotive supply chains.

Rapid prototyping and product development

Free from the costs and lead times of traditional tooling, additive manufacturing enables the rapid, iterative development of product concepts, ergonomic models and aerodynamic test parts. For manufacturers, that means more freedom to innovate and a faster time to market.

Bridge manufacturing and low-volume production

By 3D printing auto parts using modern technologies like Multi Jet Fusion (MJF), automotive companies can rapidly scale the production of functional end-use components. From customised parts to launch-phase manufacturing, it enables greater production flexibility alongside repeatable, quality-controlled low-volume manufacturing.

Functional under-bonnet and airflow components

Additive manufacturing allows automotive parts to be produced at scale with lightweight materials, internal channels and fine feature details. That makes it ideal for functional components with complex geometries, such as HVAC ducting, airflow systems, cable-routing systems, housings and brackets.

Tooling, fixtures and manufacturing support systems

The enhanced flexibility of additive manufacturing extends across the entire production workflow. It enables the rapid, on-demand production of tooling, fixtures, jigs and manufacturing aids – delivered whenever and wherever they’re needed.
